103km Usk & Wye Valley

The route starts out with a West Country landmark - the first Severn Crossing. This is a viewing platform for the weather that awaits you, to either enjoy on the way out, or look forward to on the way back, a tailwind.

Leaving the cyclepath to Chepstow before the top the ride heads down to Mathern and up to Shirenewton. The back lanes wind towards Usk, and join the old main road into town past the prison.

The flatter section of the route either side of Usk is punctuated by a snappy, steep climb and a section of tighter lanes.

Past the gliding club, the ride climbs up and follows the ridge road south of Raglan.

More lanes follow a short section of bigger road. A demanding roller coaster pitches you from views to troughs, through farms and hamlets to the manicured greens at Monmouth Rolls Golf Club. The Club House welcomes passing riders for coffee and sandwiches, and makes a secluded first stop.

The road to Monmouth snakes like a mini Alpine descent. The route then skirts the centre of the town.

The zigzag road climbs up above the town with a sting at the top where the route leaves the main road. A steep twisty descent leads to the old railway bridge over the Wye, follow the path across the river.

Starting with the climb to Clearwell the route traverses the English side of the Wye Valley, before following the descent and old bridge into Chepstow. The Wye valley is littered with great coffee shops, in the Tudor Farm House and the Castle in Clearwell, the Old Station at Tintern (a little off route) and the community coffee shop at Brockweir.

The final climb through the outskirts of Chepstow reaches a view of the Severn and the bridge home.
